How GPA Is Calculated

The 4.0 GPA Scale

Each letter grade maps to a point value: A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0. Many schools also use plus/minus grades: A+=4.3, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, B-=2.7, and so on down to D-=0.7. Your GPA is a weighted average — courses with more credit hours count more toward the final number.

Credits and Weighting

A 3-credit A contributes 12 grade points (3 × 4.0), while a 1-credit A contributes only 4. This is why taking a hard course for many credits has a larger effect on your GPA than a single-credit elective. To protect your GPA, prioritize performance in high-credit core courses.

Why GPA Matters

Most scholarships require a minimum GPA, commonly 3.0 or 3.5. Graduate school programs typically look for a 3.0+ in your field. A GPA above 3.5 is often considered Dean's List territory. Use this calculator each semester to track progress and spot which courses to prioritize for improvement.

Formula
GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) / Σ(credits)

Frequently Asked Questions

What GPA do I need for the Dean's List?

Most schools require a 3.5 or higher each semester to qualify for the Dean's List, though some set the bar at 3.7 or even 4.0. Check your specific institution's academic honors policy.

Does an A+ raise my GPA above 4.0?

It depends on your school. Some colleges award 4.3 for A+ on a weighted scale, which can push a semester GPA slightly above 4.0. Others cap A+ at 4.0. This calculator uses the 4.3 scale for A+.

How many credits should I enter per course?

Most lecture courses are 3 credits. Lab courses are often 1–2 credits. PE or seminar courses may be 0.5–1 credit. Check your course syllabus or transcript for the exact credit hours.

Can I use this to calculate a cumulative GPA across multiple semesters?

Yes — just add all your courses from every semester at once. Each row is one course; enter its grade and credit hours. The calculator will weight everything correctly.

What GPA is needed to get into graduate school?

Most master's programs require a minimum 3.0 GPA, and competitive programs often expect 3.5+. PhD programs vary widely — some prioritize research experience over GPA. Always check the specific program's requirements.

What is the formula for GPA?

GPA = Σ(grade points × credit hours) / Σ(credit hours). Multiply each course's grade point value by its credits, sum all those products, then divide by the total number of credits.
